A Git service should be boring. Ours just lives in the right country.

Gitza is South Africa’s own Git service, free public and private repositories hosted entirely in South Africa, with data residency as the default for every account and isolated Enterprise instances available on request. This page is the short answer to “who’s behind this, and why.”

South African teams push their code to another continent by default. Not because anyone chose that, but because the defaults were built somewhere else. The result is a compliance question most teams quietly ignore, a POPIA section 72 transfer burden they carry without noticing, and a 150-220ms round-trip they pay on every clone and push.

Nothing structural stops a proper Git forge from living here. The open-source foundation exists, the infrastructure exists, the demand exists. What was missing was someone building it carefully, with the residency claim treated as an engineering requirement rather than a marketing line. That’s the job.

Gitza is the public service at gitza.co.za: free public and private repositories, paid tiers per user in Rands, and the same residency guarantee for every account, whether you’re a student or a bank. Teams that need their own isolated instance, on their own domain, with a signed POPIA operator agreement, can ask for Gitza Enterprise; it’s the same forge with its own walls.

Gitza (Pty) Ltd is a South African company. The public service is open: create an account at git.gitza.co.za. hello@gitza.co.za reaches a person.
